And, compared to their Caucasian counterparts, African-American women are only half as likely to seek help. Conversations about mental health concerns remain somewhat taboo in the black community. As a result, too often women of color try to muscle their way through depression and anxiety on their own, often leading to changes in how we think and feel, and in our mood. These changes can alter our lives, making it hard to relate to others and function in ways that are effective for daily living. And so to be fully healthy, we must make a focus on mental wellness an important part of our lives. The latest installment of the campaign is produced by KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation) under its Greater Than COVID public information response and is presented with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Question #1: Do kids even need a COVID-19 vaccine?
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: Yes!
Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS: Yes.
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: The clear answer is your child needs to be vaccinated. Kids get COVID and they can get incredibly sick and even die of COVID. And, so, it's really important for parents to understand that vaccinating your kid is the number one way to protect them from getting infected with COVID, to protect them from being hospitalized with COVID and from dying with COVID.
Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS: We also know that kids of color, Black and Brown kids in particular, experience this pandemic at a rate of almost three times worse with the worst outcomes. And, so, we know that this is another way to protect the most vulnerable population from having the worst outcomes by vaccinating them.
Question #2: Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe for children?
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: The COVID vaccine is absolutely safe for kids. We know that because the rigorous clinical trials that 5 to 11-year-olds went through showed that it's safe, that the side effects that kids experience are mild and they’re ones we saw for other age groups like teenagers and young adults. Things like pain at your injection site, which might be in your upper arm, or aches and pains, fevers, chills, things that are commonly treated with over-the-counter medications and typically only last a couple of days. We have not seen serious side effects among the 5 to 11-year-old group from the clinical trials.
Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS: The data is actually deeply encouraging, and I reviewed all 82 pages of it before it was reviewed by FDA and CDC. There were no reports of anaphylaxis, no reports of myocarditis, pericarditis, Bell's palsy or appendicitis. Those are some of the biggest things that we're looking for in our safety signals and understanding how safe this vaccine is.
Question #3: Do kids get the same COVID-19 vaccine as adults?
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: The vaccine that kids are getting, age 5-11, is one-third the dose of the vaccine that's being given to adults.
Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS: The most amazing part about that is that they saw antibody levels as high as those who got the full adult dose.
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: So, the exact dose that's given to kids is actually a dose that is rigorously tested to make sure that it's safe for that age group. And that it works. That it actually protects kids from getting COVID infection or complications.
Question #4: What about long-term effects of the COVID-19 vaccine?
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: A lot of parents have been very concerned about whether the COVID vaccines affect their child's ability to go through puberty or their fertility long-term. And, so, it's really important that everyone understands that we have now been looking at this closely. There's no evidence of that.
Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS: We know that the vaccine is actually not in the person's body for very long. And, so, we're not concerned about long-term effects on the development of a child. There is no biological plausibility of these vaccines impairing fertility or reproductive health in boys or girls.
Question #5: Where can I get my child vaccinated for COVID-19?
Rhea Boyd, MD, MPH: You can go to your provider, to your pediatrician, to the doctor's office that you regularly go to. You can go to a community site...[+] Show More

The poses included in this video help to stretch the front body, the back, the neck, and the shoulders. I like doing these types of videos because I get a chance to incorporate lots of different poses. I also like to create these short practices because they are great for people who don't tend to have a lot of time for yoga throughout the day. Even 5 minutes of yoga a day may help your body feel better in general. If you have a little extra time, you can incorporate a 2 minute Savasana. You can always add a Savasana at the end of any video that doesn't include one by gently moving into a meditation. Check out my meditation playlist if you haven't already. She has led many presentations and workshops centered on the recruitment, retention, and success of underrepresented students and marginalized professionals for a plethora of conferences (i.e. National Association for College Admission Counseling, The College Board, the ACT, The Center for Leadership Development - Indianapolis, and National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education). Monica proudly serves as a Chair of the National Advisory Council for the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE).
Monica received her bachelor’s degree in African and Diaspora Studies from Vanderbilt University, her master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Mississippi College, and is currently completing her doctoral work as a Social Justice Fellow in Higher Education at Azusa Pacific University. Monica’s research centers on the existence, persistence, and resistance of Black women in American higher education, with an acute focus on other-mothering.
Monica is the current university director of Diversity Education and Cross-Cultural Engagement and the director of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center at Indiana University Bloomington. In her current position at Indiana University, Monica works collaboratively with a variety of departments, student organizations, and community partners on the overall support and advocacy for underrepresented communities and the recruitment, retention, support, and success of Black students. At its core, racism denies your humanity. At its core, sexism demeans and demands that you accept less than full person-hood. At the intersection of race and gender, there ...is little chance to be truly free. I didn’t realize that I had been doing the very thing I swore I would never do. I had gotten so good at presenting my pain, frustration, anger and hurt as a black woman to predominantly white audiences in conversations and every day life that I did not realize how exhausting it had become. So, I finally decided, I had had enough of polite conversation. I would speak my truth and declare as Beyonce had in Lemonade, “I Ain’t Sorry." Frances Cudjoe-Waters is the mother of three incredible boys and the wife of an amazing husband - all of them on the endangered list in 2017 America. After focusing on civil rights issues as a Harvard Law student two decades ago, she never thought she would see the reemergence of situations like Charlottesville, VA and the spree of killings of black bodies with repeated acquittals by white juries - something she'd only studied about in the 90's as history from the 1960's, but now lived again in the late 2010's. She is passionate, loved and loving. And somehow seeks ways to facilitate discussions between all types of people from all different places. And didn't realize until preparing for this talk, how much of a toll this always "even-ness" and dispassionate intellectualism can actually take as we all seek to just be human. Her family was recently featured by the Dallas Morning News with a profile of her family on the front page of the Sunday paper 2017. For black girls to be ...included into the makeup of society, cultural sensitivity has to be placed at the forefront to create an inclusive environment that will help bridge the gap of racial and gender disparities. Dr. LaStassia Williams is a Registered Nurse for Plano Independent School District. She is also an adjunct professor for Grand Canyon University where she teaches Concepts in Community and Public Health. She received an A.A.S in Nursing from Kilgore College, a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of Texas at Arlington, a M.A. in Human Services with a Business Management concentration from Liberty University, and a PhD in Human Services with a Public Health concentration from Capella University. The research she conducted is entitled The Influence of Religiosity on Risky Sexual Behavior in African American Women ages 18-25. She had the opportunity to do a poster presentation of her study at the 2015 National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta, GA for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to her education, LaStassia is a Human Services Board Certified Practitioner.
